“There’s no one as seductive and alluring, manic and intriguing, soothing and chaotic as he. Mastering a surprisingly broad collection of pre-rock music styles such as jazz, blues, vaudeville and experimental tendencies verging on industrial music, Tom Waits has been described as capturing the history of American song in one voice.” Rough trade; Tom Waits in profile 2023

You’ll find a line-up of hugely talented top quality musicians from around the South-East who are all passionate about the music of Mr Waits. Each will be performing their own versions of his songs, in their own unique styles for your enjoyment. There will be classic songs from Waits’ earliest days in the early 1970’s, to his later, more experimental, and sometimes surreal work.

The event is a fundraiser for the Sussex charity Dementia Singing Experience Sussex [DSES]. Here is a little info, in their own words about the amazing work they do for people who live with dementia:

‘We take structured and interactive singing, activity and craft sessions into community day care centres and dedicated care homes supporting those living with dementia and offering respite opportunities for carers. From very small beginnings, as a not for profit organisation back in July 2014, we have expanded from one session per week to at least 25 sessions per month. We are now also a registered charity.

Our aims are to help those living with this very cruel condition to still feel that there is a life worth living, that they are are still important and that they have not been forgotten. We aim to reach out to as many people as we possibly can in our area to bring the wonder of music to them as we know it can soothe, stimulate and bring to mind long forgotten memories’

The event is being held in the wonderful Jenny Lind, one of the most popular pubs and music venues in Hastings, which is in the heart of the Old town. Entry is free, but donations will be warmly appreciated, and all will be given to the charity DSES.

“It is in this utter chaos accompanied with a constant striving for beauty in the macabre that makes you fall in love with him”
